How a Florida advisor rebuilt her professional table with attorney-led estate planning

“You start with Estate Guru, and then if you can connect with the person that you’re doing it with, then they say, ‘Can we just hire you for everything?’”
- Dorothea “Dottie” Cole | Managing Partner, Compass Consulting & Financial
In Indiana, Dottie had professionals she trusted to help with her clients’ needs. When she moved her practice to Florida in 2017, rebuilding those relationships proved difficult. Clients still needed estate planning, and she wanted confidence in the care they would receive.
Estate Guru lets Dottie bring estate planning into the service she already provides. Clients work through information gathering with their financial advisor, while attorneys handle the legal work. Dottie can coordinate practical next steps through her practice, using the consulting agreement and payment arrangements she has through J.W. Cole.
Why enterprise advisors like Dottie choose Estate Guru
Dottie Cole expects the professionals she recommends to take care of her clients the way she would. In Indiana, she had built a network she trusted. Moving her practice to Florida meant rebuilding those relationships while clients still needed help getting their estate planning done.
“I always bragged that I had a conference table. … No matter what you needed when you came to me as a client, I had a professional at the table that could take care of you. When I came to Florida, I lost all of that.”
Estate Guru gave Dottie a way to help clients move forward through her practice, with attorneys responsible for the legal work. That support now has a place in Compass’s welcome materials, her client meetings, and the experience families recommend to one another.
Help clients get moving
Dottie works through the guided questionnaire with clients, giving people who have postponed planning a familiar person to help them begin.
Bring family context to the legal conversation
In one sensitive matter, the attorney called Dottie for background before discussing the legal consequences of the client’s decisions directly with her.
Fit the service into an established practice
Dottie uses her existing J.W. Cole consulting agreement and payment arrangements for the assistance she provides.
Give relatives a reason to call
When children see Dottie help their parents follow through, they have a firsthand reason to consider her for their own financial guidance.
About Dottie Cole
Dorothea “Dottie” Cole is the managing partner of Compass Consulting & Financial in Trinity, Florida. She began her financial services career in 1996 as an assistant at Smith Barney before moving into trust services and estate settlements. A senior advisor later encouraged her to become licensed, and she has been independent since 2009.
Today, she reports managing approximately $156 million as Compass’s only advisor, supported by three part-time staff members. She has served clients from six months to 104 years old, with family relationships reaching a fifth generation.
Dottie owns and runs Compass, a separate business from J.W. Cole. She offers advisory services through J.W. Cole Advisors and securities through J.W. Cole Financial.
- 30 years in financial services
- $156 million in assets under management
- Client relationships spanning five generations
Rebuilding her professional table
Dottie’s “conference table” was a network of attorneys, CPAs, and other professionals she trusted to help her clients in Indiana. Rebuilding it in Florida meant finding people who would provide the same attentive care and coordinate with the financial relationship she had already built.
“I need to know that if I refer a client to you … you’re actually taking care of them the way that I take care of them.”
Meanwhile, clients still needed basic estate planning documents, including durable powers of attorney and healthcare directives. When Estate Guru presented at a J.W. Cole symposium in 2022, she saw a practical way to offer attorney-led estate planning to clients.
She began using the platform later that year, helping clients gather information and work through the questionnaire while attorneys handled the legal work. She could stay involved as a familiar point of contact and connect clients with legal expertise.
With Estate Guru, Dottie could offer clients a planning process they could begin with her, supported by legal expertise. She could help them gather information and coordinate next steps, giving families a familiar place to act on a need they had postponed. She also continues to refer clients to specialist attorneys when their circumstances call for it, including families with special needs planning concerns.
Clear about her role, hands-on with the process
Dottie estimates that 90% of her Estate Guru sessions take place over Zoom, even for clients who live three miles from her office. She shares her screen and works through the questionnaire with them, helping clients gather information while making clear where her responsibilities end.
She values the meeting notes as a record of that explanation and the conversation that follows. Estate Guru’s attorney-led technology and legal oversight support the planning process, while Dottie helps clients work through the practical steps, including coordinating signing arrangements outside her office. Her team does not witness or notarize documents.
Attorney-led planning, with Dottie still involved
Estate Guru’s attorney involvement gives Dottie someone to coordinate with when a client needs legal guidance. In one sensitive inheritance matter, the attorney contacted her before speaking with the client, allowing Dottie to explain the family circumstances.
“I was able to explain the situation before he called the client, so I think he was able to have a better conversation with the client than if he had called the client direct.”
The attorney then discussed the legal consequences directly with the client. For Dottie, this was the professional coordination she valued: her knowledge of the family could inform the conversation while the attorney handled the legal guidance.
One agreement, another box to check
Compass has its own brand, team, and client relationships. Through J.W. Cole, Dottie also has infrastructure supporting compliance, technology, investment options, and billing.
Her Estate Guru-related assistance fits within the consulting arrangements she already uses.
“It’s the same consulting agreement that we use if we’re doing business consulting, financial consulting, financial planning. It’s just which box are you checking.”
When she charges a separate fee for that assistance, Dottie says payment goes through J.W. Cole Advisors. She has chosen to keep the work within her existing business arrangements because she often hopes to develop an ongoing financial planning relationship.
That gives the service a defined place in her practice: introduced through Compass, documented through the applicable agreement, and connected to an established payment process.
“I’m really blessed that I have a broker-dealer that truly believes in what you guys do.”
When the children see who gets it done
One couple had resisted getting estate planning documents in place for years. Dottie offered to help them work through the process using Estate Guru, and they followed through.
Their son and daughter called afterward. As Dottie recalls it, they thanked her for helping accomplish something they had long encouraged their parents to do. Then they said they wanted to move their own assets to her.
The children had seen how she cared for their parents before seeking financial guidance themselves.
Dottie describes similar introductions from siblings, cousins, and neighbors. Someone receives help and tells another person in the family.
“It came down to, you did this for my brother and sister, you did this for my mom.”
For Dottie, that is the main connection between estate planning and new assets. Her financial planning work already gives her a broad view of existing clients’ investments.
“We’re not uncovering assets. We’re uncovering issues.”
Helping address those issues gives people a specific reason to recommend her.
The growth behind the referrals
Dottie credits the relationships and family referrals developed through Estate Guru with bringing new clients and assets into her practice. At the October 2026 interview, she reported:
- $3 million in new assets under management in 2023, her first full year using Estate Guru.
- $7 million in new assets in 2026, which she attributes to Estate Guru-related relationships and referrals.
- Approximately 50% of new clients in 2026 came through those relationships, by her estimate.
Asked what keeps clients with her, Dottie smiles and gives herself some credit:
“I’m just really good at what I do.”
For Dottie, that means helping families follow through, bringing in the right professionals, and being someone they can turn to again.
Built into the relationship
Alex leads with estate planning, and Estate Guru gives him a service aligned with what brought attendees into the room: help moving their estate planning forward. Because attendees can act on the topic that drew them in, workshops have become Alex’s primary source of prospective clients.
12 of 17 households requested an appointment at one recent workshop
~20 appointment requests from a typical 40-person workshop
~12 meetings held
Planning fees through Estate Guru help support the cost of reaching those households, which gives the workshops a source of revenue alongside opportunities for broader financial work.
Alex wants to build on that foundation by improving his systems and increasing workshop frequency. His goal is to lead one each week, creating more opportunities to meet families and help them act on their planning needs.Estate Guru has become part of the service Dottie introduces from the beginning. It appears in Compass’s branded “welcome to the family” packet, and she says existing financial planning clients pay no separate fee for her assistance through the platform.
Clients can move forward with estate planning alongside someone they already trust, with attorneys handling the legal work. That experience gives them a specific reason to recommend Dottie when someone they know needs help.
One client recently asked whether she could assist a neighbor whose husband had died and whose affairs were in disarray. Dottie welcomed the introduction, whether or not it led to business.
“Send her to me. She may never become a client, but she’ll have someone in her corner to hold her hand and help her get through it.”
Estate Guru gives Dottie another way to deliver on that commitment: helping families address unfinished planning, connecting them with legal expertise, and staying involved as their financial advisor. The referrals grow from families seeing that care in action.
Bring attorney-led planning into your client relationships
Estate Guru’s attorney-led estate planning platform is not a DIY service. Attorney-led technology and legal oversight support planning, while advisors help clients gather information and connect the process with their broader financial lives.
Dottie’s experience shows how that support can become part of an established advisory practice, helping families act and giving relatives a reason to start their own conversation.
